How can we help young learners to understand complicated mathematical concepts?
How do we utilize Singapore math in the classroom?
Singapore math focuses on guiding children to comprehend complex abstract mathematical concepts by fostering a progressively deeper understanding. This is achieved by introducing new concepts in a sequential manner, thereby facilitating comprehension and mastery.
- Manipulatives (hands on)
- Pictorial
- Abstract
At Little Panthers Preschool, we meticulously design and deliver rigorous math lessons following the structured approach of Singapore math. Our goal is to gradually cultivate a profound understanding of mathematical concepts among our students.
- Introduction of new mathematical vocabulary to define and express new concepts.
- Use of fun learning videos and educational songs to explain new concepts.
- Demonstrations by Ms. Mouser using manipulatives to illustrate the new concept.
- Creation of an anchor chart for students to reference throughout the unit.
- Teaching of each concept in small groups, starting with hands-on manipulatives, then pictorial representations, and finally abstract numbers.
- Ongoing assessment of students’ progress and mastery of skills after each lesson.
- Summative assessment at the end of each learning unit to determine mastery of skills, with data shared with parents/caregivers.
